Replacing Paving Stones for More Greenery
Are you also fed up with those dull, boring paving stones in your garden? Then it's high time to pull up those stones and create more greenery! Colorful flowers and plants not only brighten up your garden but also contribute to biodiversity, reduce waterlogging, and help combat drought and heat stress. In this blog, we’ll show you how to transform your garden into a green oasis.
A Green Start
First, it’s important to consider what you want to plant in your garden. Are you going for spring or summer flowering bulbs, or would you prefer perennials? When making these decisions, think about whether your garden gets a lot of sun or is more shaded. There are special plants for shady areas, but also bulbs and plants that thrive in full sun. It's also a good idea to consider the flowering period. By planting different bulbs and perennials with a range of early and late flowering times, you can enjoy a green garden for as long as possible.
Out with the Paving Stones, In with the Greenery
When removing paving stones, it's helpful to dig a little deeper. We recommend removing about 30 centimeters of sand and then filling the hole with garden soil. It’s important that the soil is nutrient-rich and drains well so that the bulbs and plants don’t rot. The depth at which you should plant bulbs or perennials depends on the type, which you can find under the product specifications. Here, you can also see whether the plant prefers sun or shade. After planting, don’t forget to water regularly – you don’t want your favorite spring or summer bloomers to dry out!
NK Tile Lifting
Did you know there’s even a Dutch national competition for removing paving stones? The goal of this event is to make gardens greener. Not only do green gardens look great, but they also help reduce waterlogging, drought, and heat stress. The NK Tile Lifting competition pits municipalities against each other to see who can pull up the most stones. Want to join in and find out if your town is participating?
